I was the first to arrive at Petra, joining the two camels who seemed to be the unofficial watchmen of The Treasury. I’ll never forget how still and silent it was, the only sound coming from a man gently sweeping the sand away from the steps. I pictured him as a Nabatean, transported myself to 3000 B.C. when this city carved into the rock was alive, not lost. I scratched the fuzzy head of a camel as I approached him, took in every detail of the moment, and then tuned out the whole world and soaked in the magic of the Rose City.
